Whether you’ve written an article by hand or used an AI tool to speed up the process, you may need to run a final check and ensure your article passes AI detection.

The challenge is despite the rise in popularity of AI detection tools; they can often give inaccurate results.

In this article, we’ll cover how you can bypass AI content detection by humanizing your AI content — and why it’s important.

But first, why should you trust us?

We’ve written over 10 million words for hundreds of clients on every imaginable topic. We’ve used good ol’ humans, cutting-edge AI, and a combination of methods. We’ve tested tens of AI detection tools along the way, giving us an understanding of their nuances and foibles.

The Rise of AI Content Detectors

The rise of these content detectors has been fueled by the increasing sophistication of AI-generated content, which often mimics human writing so closely that it can be difficult to distinguish from the real thing. However, as these detection systems evolve, so do the strategies content creators employ to bypass them.

AI content detectors, or content detection systems, are sophisticated tools that utilize natural language processing (NLP) to identify patterns in content. The system then compares these patterns with its training data to determine whether the content was generated by artificial intelligence or a human.

The detectors are particularly adept at identifying, for example, but not limited to:

  • repetitive phrases,
  • grammatical inconsistencies,
  • the use of complex words,
  • an overly formal tone,
  • lack of originality,
  • and a predictable flow in the content.

These detection tools are designed to flag content that appears to be AI-generated based on identified patterns.

But it's important to note that these systems are not infallible. Not only can savvy content creators find ways to bypass these detectors by cleverly disguising their text or manipulating images, but pure-play human content, in our experience, can also be flagged as AI!

Why Should You Bypass AI Content Detection Tools?

It’s important to start by stating that AI content is not inherently bad. Even Google, in its latest updates in 2023 and 2024, has made it clear that AI-generated content is not the issue in itself. Just like human content, as long as AI content is valuable to the user and meets the ever-important E-E-AT guidelines, it’s acceptable to the Google Gods.

So, we’d argue that it's much more important to focus your time and energy on ensuring your content is valuable rather than trying to beat AI detection. However, some companies have a blanket policy that their content must pass AI detection, and there are false positives where human content is mistakenly flagged as robot-generated.

With the rise of AI tools and the wildly different content landscape nowadays, just like running an article through a quick spelling checker at the end of your content creation process, adding AI detection to the checklist makes sense.

9 Easy Techniques for Avoiding AI Detection

Now, let’s delve into the various techniques that can be employed to avoid AI detection, focusing on manipulating text and sentence structures. These techniques require a certain level of ingenuity, creativity, and a deep understanding of how AI detection algorithms work.

Using the quick tips below, you can effectively evade AI detection by diversifying language usage, incorporating contextual nuances, and continuously refining your approach.

But before you dive headfirst into editing, don’t forget the golden rule:

The goal is not only to create content that is not undetectable by AI systems but to create “original, high-quality content that demonstrates qualities of what we call E-E-A-T: expertise, experience, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness”, as stated by Google.

So, let's explore these techniques in detail.

1. Synonyms

One common approach is to use synonyms, replacing common words with similar but less detectable alternatives. This technique effectively confuses the AI detector, making it difficult to identify specific keywords or phrases.

2. Additional words

Another method involves inserting additional words into the text. This creates a form of 'noise' that misleads the AI detector, making it harder to identify the true content accurately. You must ensure that the inserted words are contextually relevant, natural parts of the text.

3. Update punctuation

Strategic punctuation and symbol additions can also help bypass AI content detectors. One effective technique is to insert non-standard characters within certain words, like replacing the letter 'o' with a zero or 'a' with '@.' However, maintaining readability and not overdoing it is crucial, as excessive usage may make the content appear spammy or untrustworthy.

4. Alter sentence structure

Another effective method is to rearrange sentence syntax. By changing the order of words, phrases, or clauses in a sentence, you can sidestep detection algorithms that rely on specific grammar patterns or word combinations.

5. Add lists

Breaking longer paragraphs into bullet point lists is not only an excellent way to make your content more reader-friendly, but this alteration disrupts the AI's ability to identify and flag the content as potentially problematic.

6. Remove common AI phrases

Try to steer clear of fancy transition words like "Moreover," "Furthermore," "Additionally," or "In conclusion." Research suggests that text identified as AI often includes these words. While ChatGPT loves to sprinkle them in, using them could inadvertently make your writing look more AI-generated.

7. Write naturally

Mix things up in your writing style. By injecting some informality into your writing and embracing imperfections, you'll have a better chance of flying under the radar of AI detectors.

8. Add variety

Don't forget to vary your sentence structure and length. Unlike humans, ChatGPT struggles to naturally mix up its sentences, often sticking to a rigid pattern. AI detectors can pick up on this lack of variation, so breaking free from the mold and keeping your writing dynamic is essential.

9. Check your Flesch score

Write like you're addressing a fifth-grader. Even esteemed authors like Ernest Hemingway aimed for a fourth to sixth-grade reading level, prioritizing readability above all else. While ChatGPT tends to write at a more advanced reading level, simplifying your language can actually help your writing appear more human and less like it's been generated by AI.

Summing up

AI content creation is a valuable tool for businesses. It enables you to scale your online presence in a previously too-expensive or time-consuming way for most companies.

That said, whether you're creating AI content, human content, or a mix of the two, it's crucial to maintain readability and coherence in your content.

Use AI to get the creative juices flowing, then add human intervention to ensure the content is tailored to your business goals and resonates with your reader's needs.
